Want To Become A More Productive And Profitable Business?

Research conducted by Queen's University investigated if management practices were a key contributor to Northern Ireland's poor economic productivity. It found companies with higher management scores perform better.

The researcher's key findings were:

  1. The proportion of managers having taken a leadership course, and the proportion of highly qualified managers, are important determinants of high management.

  2. Management practice scores increase with the size of the firm.

  3. Firms that generate a higher proportion of their turnover within Northern Ireland have lower management practices scores.

  4. Second-generation family-managed firms have lower management practices scores.

  5. Receiving government support and multinational status are not associated with a firm’s management practices scores.

They made 3 recommendations for business:

  1. The ability to adopt new technology and increase digitalisation is linked to a business’ management practices.

  2. Adopting best practice in management requires investment in the human capital of managers, particularly regular leadership training.

  3. Businesses with characteristics associated with poorer management practices should proactively seek opportunities to improve their managers.

While equipping managers with the key skills required to perform effectively has been identified as a global priority for 2024 this research highlights the benefits to Northern Ireland businesses.
